about

The modular work "Rugosa Rose" for solo violin appears in two formations on this compilation of solos for virtuosi written in the early 2Ks. Beautifully realized by Mark Menzies, who commissioned it, this recording was made on his Guarneri violin using gut strings.

Rugosa Rose was commissioned in 2000 and premiered and toured from 2001-2003 or so. The score demands the performer rearrange sections and play fragments in different orders depending on the day of the performance making every performance potentially unique. Garden Works features two favorite variations Menzies and myself agreed on after hearing it in many different forms.
