Early Pop Music by Nicholas Chase under moniker Soul Parish. Soul Parish recorded in the middle east, London and US West Coast through the late '90s. In 1992, Soul Parish made a radical shift into Goth Wave on a full length CD entitled "Journal of Half Wakened Dreams." The CD was well received by underground radio and press and the club single "Lilith" featuring an opera singer over drum machines charted #2 in the German club scene.

Chase abandoned Soul Parish as a project in 1999, but has revisited writing pop singles since 2005.

This project collects a handful of songs that were recorded in less-than-ideal circumstances, or never recorded at all, and offers them in the style and production imagined at the time they were written. For instance, in an alternate world, "Electric Blue" would have been recorded at Eurythmics' Church using the gear Stewart and Lennox played on the "Sweet Dreams" album. Chase has faithfully referenced notes and lead sheets, and paired those with modern day research to match his ideas with the sound of technology that would have been available at the time.

The result is a kind of time travel, making new recordings sound old, but also imagining what it might have been like to innovate with specific gear and producers in hopes of producing a hit record.

** Current streaming versions are preview mixes of the finished tracks. The project is still in production.

Track Name: Electric Blue
You always knew how to pull my strings
I always knew you would break my heart
And when I tried to find the better things
You found a better way to break my heart

Why don’t you leave me alone?
Why can’t you let me move on?
You just
Keep me hanging on!

I knew the day that you came along
You’d be a mound full of trouble
And so I thought that I would play the pawn
And now I’m paying double

Why can’t you leave me alone, yeah?
Why don’t you let me go on?
You just keep me hanging on, uh huh

Electric Blue
You tripped a wire in my heart
Electric Blue
I’m getting burned by the spark
Electric Blue
I should have known from the start
Electric Blue

I let you take me by surprise
Giving me the finer things
But now your touch is as cold as ice
And every kiss is another sting

Electric Blue
You tripped a wire in my heart
Electric Blue
I’m getting burned by the spark
Electric Blue
I should have known from the start
Electric Blue

BREAK

I couldn’t leave you if I tried
You said you loved me
Now/But I know you lied

Electric Blue
You tripped a wire in my heart
Electric Blue
I’m getting burned by the spark
Electric Blue
I should have known from the start

Repeat & ad lib.

Track Name: Play By The Rules (7" Edit)
I’m sick and tired of fighting
Just for what I know is mine
Tell me I can’t have it
Destruction is a sign of times

Play by the rules

Let’s replay the action
In slow motion from the start
Watch from all the angles
Now this is where you stole my heart

Take me for a sucker
While I’m trippin’ on my tongue
Come on, give me credit
at least I know who’s lost, who’s won

Play by the rules

BREAK

I’m sick and tired of wages
That won’t even pay my rent
I think I’ll bill my agent
For the cash that I can’t spend

Play by the rules
Track Name: Mercy (Don't Leave Me Crying) 12" Long Version Preview Mix
Tears
that run
like wine
never fell when you were mine
Tears
that’s all
and time
please don’t leave me crying

Mercy mercy
Don’t leave me crying
Mercy mercy

Mercy mercy
Don’t leave me crying

Page
to page
each phrase
seems to linger without place
each hour I burn
now you’ve got to show some

Mercy mercy
Mercy mercy
you’ve got to show some
Mercy mercy
don’t leave me crying

BREAK

Tears
that run
like wine
never fell when you were mine
Tears
that’s all all
no time
please don’t leave me crying

Mercy mercy
don’t leave me crying
Mercy mercy
you’ve got to show some
Mercy mercy
Track Name: Better Than This (Preview Mix)
Love won’t last forever
Just you take your time
If we do things my way
We’ll pick up lost time

Don’t look on in anger
Aren’t we tempting fate?
I can’t wait forever
And it’s getting late

Better than this
Anything’s better than this...

I can’t wait forever
Just make up your mind
I can do things your way
But you’re flying blind

Wise up
Get it straight
There’s no time to hesitate
This thing
Can’t you see
Is propelled by gravity

Better than this
Anything’s better than this

BREAK

Love won’t last forever
Just you take your time
If we do things your way
We’ll be flying blind

Watch the ships weigh anchor
Drifting out to sea
Outtakes from old movies
It all makes sense to me

Better than this
Anything’s better than this...

Wise up get it straight
There’s no time to hesitate
This thing can’t you see
Is propelled by gravity

Better than this
Anything’s better than this...

Love won’t last forever
